December 15, 2023
On December 8, Nexstar's WLNS-TV (Lansing) held its 16th Annual Day of Giving, again this year benefiting the Greater Lansing Food Bank and the South Michigan Food Bank to help feed those in need during the holiday season. The all-day event was to raise both food and monetary donations for the food banks.
WLNS had two donation points, one in Lansing outside their studios and another in Jackson outside the Consumers Energy Building and also solicited cash donations on the station website.
A spokesperson for the Greater Lansing Food Bank said this year the agency has seen a huge increase in the need in the community. "We've seen a 30% increase across our network of agencies that as the equivalent to about 17,000 households a month utilizing our services so this food is gonna go a long way," said the spokesperson. The two food banks serve 15 counties across the WLNS viewing area. They support hundreds of partner agencies, pantries, kitchens and other local agencies to help provide food to those in need.
During the station's 5:00 p.m. broadcast, it was noted that 800 pounds of food was collected and that they already reached that $1,000 record.
