Format Flips in Grand Rapids and the Upper Peninsula

July 12, 2024

During our newsletter break for the 4th of July, your MAB learned of three stations with format adjustments here in Michigan.  In Grand Rapids, Townsquare Media has rebranded Classic Hits 98.7 WFGR-FM as “98.7 The Grand."

The station is now focusing on rock-learning artists of the 70s and 80s as “Timeless Hits of the 70s, 80s and More.” RadioInsight writes that core artists include Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Billy Joel, The Eagles, John Mellencamp, Bob Seger, Steely Dan, REO Speedwagon, the Steve Miller Band and Tom Petty.  WFGR's format adjustment and rebranding began on July 3.

Townsquare Media Michigan VP/Content Eric Meier will host middays on the station. Cluster Production Director and WGRD-FM midday host Janna Hoke will follow in afternoons. The station’s morning show will be jockless outside of news and weather updates from WXMI-TV.

Also on July 3, Radio Results Network has completely flipped the formats of two Upper Peninsula AM stations.  Both WDMJ-AM (Marquette) and WMIQ-AM (Iron Mountain) have moved from conservative talk to 60s/70s oldies.  Both reportedly using a format from Local Radio Networks. WDMJ identifies now as "Marquette's Greatest Hits" and WMIQ, similarly is now identified as "Iron Mountain's Greatest Hits."
