WCSG’s Becky Carlson Retires
August 23, 2024
Cornerstone University's WCSG-FM (Grand Rapids) announced last week that longtime News Director Becky Carlson has retired after 40 years. In a Facebook post, the station writes that "Becky has served WCSG with humility and patience over the years and has consistently practiced careful discernment in selecting news stories and relaying the day’s headlines with an impartial, factual, and compassionate approach. Her voice has become a reassuring presence in an often-chaotic world and will be greatly missed at WCSG. She is the longest running female radio news reporter in Michigan and while we are sad to see her go, we are so excited for Becky and her retirement!"
Growing up in Rogers City, Michigan (and as the daughter of Harvey and Janice Klann), she joined her father's radio stations (WHAK-AM/WHSB-FM) while in high school, working part-time in the summers as an on-air host and did the daily sign off. She attended Grand Rapids Baptist College (now Cornerstone University) and began an internship at WCSG in 1980, becoming a full-time news reporter at WCSG in 1981.
Replacing Carlson as News Director Michigan broadcast veteran Chuck LaTour. A Detroit-area native, LaTour began his radio career in Sault St. Marie, followed by stops in Petoskey and St. Ignace. In 1984, he began his West Michigan career, spending 16 years at WLHT-FM (Grand Rapids). He then moved over the WTRV-FM (Grand Rapids) where he spent 11 years. He has spent the last 7 years at WOOD-AM (Grand Rapids) while also doing some occasional work for WOOD-TV.
