Veteran broadcaster and journalist Jon King has been named editor-in-chief of Michigan Advance. King, previously senior reporter at the news operation, has been a journalist for more than 35 years and has served as past president of the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors Association. He has been recognized for excellence numerous times, including in 2021 and 2022 with the best investigative story award by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters. He is also an adjunct faculty member at Cleary University in Howell, Michigan, teaching courses in communication and media literacy.

King was News Director at WHMI-FM (Howell) for nearly 20 years, leaving in January, 2022.  He became Senior Reporter at Michigan Advance in November, 2023.

“I am honored to take on this role, and excited to help Michigan Advance remain one of the leaders in coverage of the Great Lakes State’s politics, social issues and personalities that make this such a unique place to work and live,” said King.

Michigan Advance, founded in 2018 and named the Michigan Press Association’s “News Media Publication of the Year” for 2023, is part of States Newsroom, the nation’s largest state-focused nonprofit news organization. The network reports on politics and policy from every capital, with coverage provided free of charge – without pop-ups, paywalls or ads.

King replaces former editor Susan Demas, who departed in February.
