Former Detroit Air Personality Jerry Lubin Has Passed Away

The MAB has learned that former Detroit radio personality Jerry Lubin passed away on February 4, reportedly from COVID-19 related health issues. Lubin was one of the so-called WABX-FM “Air Aces” that graced the station’s airwaves in the ’70s and early ’80s.  WABX was a widely influential freeform/progressive rock radio station in Detroit for years.  The station’s format came to an end on January 9, 1984 with the playing of “When the Music’s Over” by The Doors.

Lubin told the Detroit Free Press in 2003 of working at WABX, “There was something gained other than a paycheck. A degree of passion was involved. (It was) being able to express oneself politically, socially, culturally, whatever on the radio either by saying things or by playing things.’’

Lubin’s career also included stints at WRIF-FM, WWWW-FM and WLLZ-FM.
