Detroit SMPTE Presents “Argus Building Buildout of Michigan Radio Studios”
The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Detroit Section will host a free virtual meeting open to all members, guests and non-members on Tuesday, January 11 at 7:00 p.m. The topic will be “Argus Building Buildout of Michigan Radio Studios” with speaker Bob Skon, Chief Engineer, Michigan Radio.
This virtual meeting is free and open to guests and non-members.
After several decades in the Literature, Science and Arts building on the central campus, the radio stations of the University of Michigan completed their move to an off-campus site, the Argus Building, in 2003. Our speaker, Bob Skon, guided and oversaw the move from the LS&A building to the newly-remodeled historic factory of the Argus Camera Company just west of downtown Ann Arbor.

Bob Skon began his radio career when he joined Michigan Radio in 1996 as the weekend morning on air host. Due to his experience in Los Angeles as a recording studio installation and maintenance technician, he began splitting his time with the engineering department, and moved into engineering full time when he accepted the position of Chief Engineer. Bob was instrumental in Michigan Radio’s transition from analog to digital, in the move from their original studios atop the LS&A Building to the current Argus Building facility, and in the building of the new WVGR transmitter facility.
