June 2, 2023
The MAB has learned that 47-year Broadcast Journalist and WDMK-FM (Detroit) host Mildred Gaddis is the subject of a feature article in the Michigan Chronicle's Digital Daily. Gaddis, a recent recipient of a MAB Broadcast Excellence Award for Community Involvement, is host of Beasley Media’s “The Mildred Gaddis Show," heard Sundays from 8 to 11 a.m.
Gaddis is the driving force behind “Sleeping Bags for the Homeless,” which provides much needed protection from the harsh Midwest winters to those in our community needing it the most. The project is now in its eighth year.
The Michigan Chronicle feature reveals details of her career, starting in radio during her high school years in Hattiesburg, MS. She went to college at Texas Southern University, where she worked on the school's radio station. Her first professional job was in Houston and then onto St. Louis, where she spent ten years. Gaddis moved to Detroit in 1988, initially as News Director for WJLB.
The piece describes her arrival in the Motor City and her interaction with Mayor Coleman Young; the heat she took over questioning the behavior of another Detroit Mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick; and the fact that she has had the opportunity of interviewing three U.S. Presidents and appearing on a host of national media outlets as a political commentator and analyst.
