Michigan Public Radio Stations Win PMJA Awards

Five Michigan public radio stations were recognized by the Public Media Journalists Association (PMJA).  Each year, PMJA recognizes the best of local public radio news in a wide array of categories. Interlochen Public Radio, WKAR Public Media, WMUK-FM, WDET-FM and Michigan Public all received accolades for their work. The award winners were announced at the PMJA annual conference in Washington, D.C.  June 5-7, 2024.  Each year, PMJA recognizes the best of local public radio news in a wide array of categories.

In Division A (for stations with a 0-3 newsroom staff), WMUK-FM won first place in Audience Engagement Program for "Why's That?"  WMUK also won a second-place award in the Series category for "It Happens Here."   In the Spot News category, WMUK won a second place for "Kalamazoo group plans to house the unhoused for Christmas."

In Division B (Stations with 4-7 newsroom staff), Interlochen Public Radio won first place in the Arts Feature category for "Musical Mystery: Piano turns up in pedestrian tunnel."  Interlochen also picked up a second place award in the Narrative/Produced Podcast category with "Points North: No Ice Is Safe Ice."  The station also picked up a first place award in the Sports Feature category with "Points North: The Stone Skipping Philosopher."

Also in Division B, WKAR Public Media took home a second place in the Arts Feature category for "Tease A Gogo brings holidaypthemed burlesque to mid-Michigan."  WKAR also won a second place award in the Visual Storytelling category with "Deer hunters sight in guns before opening day."

In Division C (Stations with a 8-15 newsroom staff), WDET-FM won a first place in Audience Engagement Program for "Detroit Today: Reckoning with the construction and rebuild of I-375."  WDET also won a first place in Newscast with "WDET 5am newscast 091523."

In Division D (Stations with a 16-29 newsroom staff), Michigan Radio placed first in the Enterprise category with "Behind the push to end UAW tiers."
