CW Network to Return to WKBD-TV September 1

August 2, 2024

Nexstar Media Group, Inc. and Paramount Global announced earlier this week that two CBS/Paramount-owned independent stations will become affiliates of The CW Network on September 1.  This includes WKBD-TV (Detroit) along with WBFS-TV (Miami).  Both stations will begin carrying the network's news, primetime entertainment, live sports, and special event programming at that time.

The Desk reports that Nexstar has been looking for a new home for the CW Network in Miami and Detroit after the E. W. Scripps Company said it would drop the CW affiliations from seven of its owned or operated stations.  The CW is currently affiliated in Detroit with Scripps' WMYD-TV.

In September, 2023 the CW affiliation moved from WKBD-TV to WADL-TV after CBS/Paramount announced that it would drop the CW affiliations from its owned and operated stations nationwide, including WKBD.  This followed the sale of controlling interest in the network to Nexstar.

Earlier in 2023, an agreement was reached to to sell WADL to Mission Broadcasting, a company that works closely with Nexstar through station operating agreements and financing. However that deal was stalled and later terminated after FCC concerns about the relationship between the two companies.  During the time the deal was in limbo, WADL elected to drop the CW affiliation after two months and the network then moved to WMYD-TV in November, 2023.
