Reminder: September 15 Deadline for Updating ETRS Form One in Preparation for Nationwide EAS Test, and an FCC Notice on the Accessibility of EAS Messages

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has scheduled a nationwide EAS test for October 4, 2023, at approximately 2:20 pm EDT, using the Internet-based Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) (with a back-up date of October 11 if necessary). In a Public Notice released in August, the FCC set out steps that broadcasters should take to prepare for that test.

Morgan Murphy Media is acquiring four FMs, two AMs, two translators, and three television stations in Northern Michigan from five holding companies held by the estate of Stephen Marks.  Marks, former MAB Chairman, passed away unexpectedly on May 11, 2022 at age 72.

Amy Robinson Joins WKAR as News Director

WKAR Public Media (East Lansing) has announced that Amy Robinson has joined its staff as News Director.  Robinson most recently was News Director at WCMU Public Media in Mount Pleasant.  There she supervised WCMU’s reporters and ran a summer internship program for Central Michigan University students pursuing a career in journalism.

WOMC’s Jim ”JJ” Johnson to Retire

Detroit broadcast veteran and host of WOMC’s “JJ and JoAnne Morning Show” Jim “JJ” Johnson announced he will retire after 52 years in Detroit radio. His last day on air will be December 1. Johnson started his career on 104.3, then known as WEXL, but rose to fame in Detroit as a morning show host on WWWW-FM.

With little advanced public fanfare, Adell Broadcasting’s WADL-TV (Detroit) has picked up the programming of the CW Network as of September 1.  That was the date CBS previously announced that it would drop the CW affiliations from its owned and operated stations nationwide, including Detroit’s WKBD-TV.
