Reminder: EEO Reports Due June 1

Radio and television station employment units (SEUs) located in the District of Columbia, Virginia, West Virginia, Michigan, Ohio, Arizona, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming with five or more full-time employees must prepare by Thursday June 1, 2023, an annual EEO Public File Report (PFR). The report must be posted on the website belonging to each station in the SEU and uploaded to its online public inspection file at the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC’s or Commission’s) website.

AM For Every Vehicle Act Introduced In Congress

RadioInk reports that a bipartisan coalition in the United States Congress has introduced the AM for Every Vehicle Act – legislation that would require federal regulators to mandate AM radio in new vehicles without an additional charge.

Women of WLNS help Habitat for Humanity Build a Home

On May 15, women staffers from Nexstar’s WLNS-TV (Lansing) spent a day volunteering with Habitat for Humanity to help build a home for future local homeowner Brittni Perry.  Anchors Sheri Jones, Chivon Kloepfer and Kiyerra Lake were joined by other female staff from the station, including VP/GM Marci Daniels, in assisting other Habitat for Humanity volunteers construct the new home.

2023 Regional Murrow Award Winners Announced

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has announced the recipients of the 2023 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards.  The 9 Michigan broadcasters won a total of 18 awards in Region 7, which is shared with Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.  Award recipients demonstrate the spirit of excellence that Murrow set as a standard for the profession of electronic journalism.

Michigan Radio’s Rachel Ishikawa Wins AAJA Excellence in Audio Storytelling Award

The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) has announced that Michigan Radio’s Rachel Ishikawa is the winner of their 2023 Excellence in Audio Storytelling, News Feature Award. Ishikawa won the award for her feature “The story of Kinuko Yada DeVee.”

FCC Repeals COVID-Era Accommodation that Allowed Broadcasters to Offer Businesses Free Advertising Time Without LUC Implications

On May 15, the FCC’s Media Bureau released a Public Notice announcing that it was repealing the COVID related guidance released in March 2020 that allowed broadcasters, local cable operators, and other media companies subject to the requirements that political candidates be offered Lowest Unit Rates during pre-election periods, to offer free advertising time to advertisers and other local businesses without those spots being considered in calculating the LUC during the periods that these spots were running.

Mission Broadcasting To Acquire WADL-TV Detroit From Adell Broadcasting

Mission Broadcasting, Inc. announced May 17 that it has agreed to acquire WADL-TV in Detroit, Michigan from Adell Broadcasting Corporation. The MyNetworkTV affiliated station has been serving Detroit, the nation’s 14th largest market, since its launch in May 1989, and currently reaches nearly two million television households. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
