Former MAB/MABF Chair Stephen Trivers Passes

The MAB is sad to pass along that former MAB and MAB Foundation Chairman Stephen Trivers passed away April 10 at age 85.  Trivers, along with Bill Wertz founded Fairfield Broadcasting in Kalamazoo, which would eventually own WQLR-FM (now WVFM), WKZO-AM, WKLZ-AM and WQSN-AM (now WTOU).

Michigan Radio Receives Peabody Award Nomination

On April 13, the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors announced that the Michigan Radio news story, “Nine Days in a Michigan Abortion Clinic, as Election Looms” has been nominated for a prestigious Peabody Award in the Radio/Podcast category.

Dave LewAllen Signs Off After 35 Years

At the end of last night’s (4/13) 6 p.m. newscast, Dave LewAllen said goodbye WXYZ-TV (Detroit) viewers as he retires after 35 years. LewAllen, first joined the station as a sports reporter in 1988.

Art Vuolo, Jr. passes along news of the passing of John “Ankles” Stewart has passed away.  Stewart was the longtime engineer/producer of the popular Dick Purtan radio show at CKLW Windsor, Ontario and Detroit stations: WCZY Z-95-5, WKQI Q-95 and WOMC 104.3 FM.

April 18 SMPTE Meeting Includes Tour of WWJ-TV/WKBD-TV

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) Detroit Section will host a meeting this Tuesday Night (4/18) at the studios of WWJ-TV/WKBD-TV in Detroit.  The meeting is free and open to guests and non-members and begins at 7:00 p.m.

Protect AM Radio in Vehicles

Recently headlines have come out about auto manufacturers considering removing AM radio from vehicles. On behalf of more than 230 radio stations in the state, the Michigan Association of Broadcasters is working to identify ways to preserve radio in cars and make lawmakers and car manufacturers aware of how dangerous removing terrestrial radio from vehicles will be for public safety.

WJR/Detroit Named Radio Home of USFL’s Michigan Panthers

Cumulus Media’s News/Talk WJR-AM (Detroit) has entered into an agreement with the United States Football League (USFL) to serve as the official radio broadcast and play-by-play partner of the Michigan Panthers for the 2023 season.

For Large Market Station of the Year, both Cornerstone University’s WCSG-FM (Grand Rapids) and Lanser Broadcasting’s WJQK-FM (Zeeland/Grand Rapids) are finalists in the category, along with three other stations in Omaha, Kansas City and Greenville, South Carolina.
